Not every yard needs a solid wall of wood. Sometimes you just want to mark your space, keep things tidy, and still let the garden breathe. That's exactly what a good neighbour fence does - and honestly, it's one of our favourite styles to build.

The alternating board layout means each side of the fence looks finished and clean. Your neighbour gets the same neat face you do. No ugly side, no argument about who gets the 'good' side. It's a small detail that goes a long way toward keeping things friendly on the street.

The open spacing also works really well in gardens with mature trees and landscaping. A fully solid fence in a setting like this would feel heavy and closed off. The gaps let light through, keep the space feeling airy, and let you actually see and enjoy the greenery around you.

We use cedar for this style because it holds up well outdoors, takes the weather without warping badly, and looks great right from day one. Fresh cedar has that warm honey tone that sits naturally in any garden setting. It also ages into a nice silver-grey if you prefer to leave it natural.

If you're trying to figure out whether a good neighbour fence or a full privacy fence is the right call for your yard, we're happy to talk it through. There's no one-size-fits-all answer - it really comes down to what you want the space to feel like.
