A wobbly, beat-up fence is one of those things you stop really seeing after a while. It blends into the background - until a neighbor or guest points it out. That's exactly the kind of situation we walked into on this one. The old fence was dark, weathered, and leaning. It had seen better days.

Here's what we were working with: an aging board fence that had lost its structural integrity and curb appeal entirely. Sections were visibly unsecured, the wood had taken on that heavy dark stain that comes with years of moisture and neglect, and the whole run just looked tired. Not a great first impression from the street.

We pulled it all out and went with a clean board-over-board cedar installation. This is our base-level design, and honestly - it delivers. The board-over-board layout means every board overlaps the next, giving you full privacy with no gaps, while the natural cedar grain adds a warmth that painted or treated wood just can't match. It's a solid, no-frills approach that holds up and looks great without a big price tag.

The difference from the street is night and day. A long, consistent run of fresh cedar now defines the property line cleanly - level cap, tight boards, and that natural honey tone that cedar brings right out of the gate. We also built out a matching gate section that blends right into the fence line. The whole thing just feels sharp and put-together.

If you've got a fence that's past its prime and you're not sure where to start, board-over-board cedar is worth a serious look. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to get real privacy and solid curb appeal without overcomplicating the job. We do this kind of work all over Portland and the results speak for themselves.
