Not every yard is flat. That's just reality. And when the ground rolls or drops along your fence line, you've got two options - fight the terrain and end up with gaps at the bottom, or build with it and get a fence that actually fits. We went with the second option here.

This is a contoured dog ear cedar fence, and the key word is contoured. Instead of running the fence in straight horizontal sections that leave awkward open gaps where the ground dips, we follow the grade. Each panel steps or curves to match the ground below it. The result is a clean, consistent look from top to bottom with no weird openings for pets to squeeze through or debris to pile up in.

The cedar itself is doing a lot of work here. Fresh cedar has that rich, warm tone straight out of the gate - and it holds up. It's naturally resistant to rot and insects, which matters a lot when you're installing against soil and damp grass. The horizontal rails and posts are tight, the boards are evenly spaced, and the dog ear tops give it that classic finished look without being fussy.

What we ended up with is a solid privacy fence that gives this yard a real boundary - one that looks intentional and sharp, not like an afterthought. It works hard on the practical side too. Full privacy, clean sightlines from the house, and a bottom edge that stays tight to the ground across the whole run.

If your yard has grade changes and you've been putting off a fence because you weren't sure how to handle it, a contoured cedar installation is worth a serious look. It solves the problem cleanly and looks great doing it.
